About the Programme
In accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Slovenia, foreigners studying in Slovenia’s educational institutions, who practice or participate in the long-term international student exchange programmes in educational institutions of Slovenia, must obtain a residence permit for study purposes.
A holder of a ‘student’ residence permit has the following rights:
The right to reside in the Republic of Slovenia during the period, for which the residence permit is issued
The right of visa-free travel around the Schengen Area
The right to work officially in Slovenia (students can work from the first month of studying)
The right to participate in international exchange programmes, for example Erasmus+, and to undergo study placement in European companies.
The right to submit documents for obtaining necessary visas to visit other countries directly in Slovenia
After the successful completion of studies, students have the right to extend their residence permit in order to search for work
A holder of a ‘student’ residence permit has the following obligations:
A holder of a ‘student’ residence permit has to fulfil the purpose, for which the residence permit was issued, that is, to study. State bodies have the right to request from educational institutions information about the student’s attendance and progress. In case of any violations, the residence permit can be terminated ahead of time
Receive temporary registration at the place of residence
Have a valid insurance that covers medical care in Slovenia
The higher vocation institution and university students, as well as schoolchildren who visit the primary or secondary school in Slovenia, can apply for the Slovenian residence permit for study purposes.

There are two ways for students to file documents and obtain a residence permit for study purposes:
To submit documents at the Embassy of Slovenia in the country of your permanent or temporary residence (given the availability of citizenship or residence permit at the current country of stay).
To submit documents and receive a residence permit directly in Slovenia. In order to implement this method, the student must have a corresponding visa if his or her citizenship does not allow visiting Slovenia in visa-free mode.
A residence permit for study purposes is issued for one year and can be extended every year subject to a successful transition to the next academic year.
To obtain a residence permit for study purposes, it is important to correctly prepare the entire package of documents. That is why the 2TM Company accompanies its clients in both variants of receiving a residence permit. FAQ
Are there any age restrictions for admission to the educational institutions of Slovenia?
For adults, there are no age restrictions for entering higher vocational institutions, universities, and secondary schools in Slovenia. For students up to 18 years old, the educational route goes according to the state education system (9 years of primary school, 3–4 years of secondary school or gymnasium). Later, both local and foreign students can choose any available level of education according to the study progress they had in their country of residence.
If the student has a family, can he or she reunite it? If so, when and on what conditions?
Sure, the reunion programme is available to all foreigners legally residing in Slovenia, including students. For family reunion, the basic requirements are to live in the country for at least one year under any of the residence permit grounds, as well as to present sufficient financial security for all family members, including the student himself/herself. Both official salary and savings on the student’s personal bank account are considered. The student’s husband/wife and their minor children are subject to the reunion programme as well.
How many hours can students work?
Students have no restrictions on the hours of work. At the same time, their work should not interfere with the ground, under which they have entered the country, i.e. study. This is the main criterion for choosing the workload. Meanwhile, if students want to find a full rate, it is necessary to change the residence permit ground and apply for a residence permit for employment purposes.
Can I enter an educational institution if I already have a higher education?
Certainly, you can. You can always continue your studies according to the degree you already have, for example, under a Master’s or a PhD degree programme. You can also choose a new profession and receive the second or even the third diploma. For different steps of the educational system of Slovenia, you need to provide a different package of documents. This means that if you already have a higher education, but in a different area, then for entering a bachelor’s degree programme, you must provide a school certificate. I want to master a new profession, which definitely allows me to find a job later in Slovenia. Is it possible?
In Slovenia, there is a list of in-demand professions, for which the employment procedure is simplified. This means that any foreigner can enter into such a profession and get a work offer even during the studies. This list is changed every year as well as all study programmes. This is necessary for successful business mobility and the demand for graduates. So, any study programme, if it is launched for the new academic year, will be relevant for subsequent employment.
Is it possible to study at Slovenian universities if I do not know the Slovenian language at all?
You can enter most of the study programmes without knowledge of the language because Slovenian educational institutions basically do not impose requirements for passing the Slovenian language exam before admission. However, under such conditions, it will be difficult to study because you will lose part of the study material due to misunderstanding. No matter how easy the Slovenian language is for different language groups of foreigners, it is still better to master it at least at the basic level until the moment of your language course hours and continue to learn it after your arrival to the country. We recommend passing at least 100 hours of language course hours and several blocks of language couses. You can see the schedule of the language school courses on our website.
If I find a job, can I change a student residence permit to a work residence permit?
Yes, you can, and most of our students do it. If you have a student residence permit, you can start working already while studying. More than that, you can already start looking for a full rate contract. As soon as the employer offers you a work contract for at least one year, you will need to receive the consent of the Employment Service for your employment, and then submit a full package of documents for receiving a residence permit under new grounds. You can start working only after receiving an updated residence permit card. We accompany the procedures for extending a residence permit with a change in the ground. We assist both the employer in compliance with the necessary procedures for the employment of a foreigner, and the employee in the extension/receipt of a work residence permit.
