Company registration in Slovenia is one of the possibilities for foreigners to obtain a residence permit. If you have decided to move to Slovenia and start your own business or purchase a real estate holding, first of all you will need to register a legal entity. This procedure on average takes up to two weeks and, since 2020, no longer requires a mandatory visit to Slovenia. Therefore, it can be carried out remotely. A standard practice for foreign founders is to register a limited liability company (družba z omejeno odgovornostjo, d.o.o.) in Slovenia.

FAQ
Who can register a company?
Any foreigner can become a founder of a company in Slovenia. In Slovenia, there is no obligatory requirement to have a local citizen as a founder, and you are also not required to have local citizens as employees.
How can a company founder obtain a residence permit?
It is necessary to comply with the condition of company’s business activity, i.e. investments or the presence of an employed person for at least six months, or a minimum turnover confirmed for six months.
Who can be employed with my company?
You can additionally hire any person in your company, both a foreigner and a local citizen. You yourself can hold any hired position in your company (except for Director), depending on the level of your education and experience, by going through the necessary procedures through the employment service. Depending on the status of potential employees in Slovenia, you can also grade their salaries and expand your team at your discretion.
Is it possible to reunite with the company holder’s family?
A residence permit obtained for business purposes is legally the same as a residence permit for employment purposes. Family reunion is available to a company holder. His or her children can study for free in schools, gymnasiums, and secondary vocational institutions of Slovenia. Reunited family members have access to state health insurance and social support. Obtaining permanent residence for reunited family members is tied to the period of the company holder’s official residence.
