Digital nomad in Slovenia

More
Important information
In November 2025, Slovenia will introduce its long-awaited Digital Nomad Programme for freelancers and remote professionals who work online and explore different countries in search of the best destination for long-term relocation.

About the programme

A digital nomad in Slovenia is a non-EU citizen who works remotely — as a freelancer, self-employed professional or sole trader — and is not tied to a fixed workplace. In other words, someone who can live and work from anywhere.

Like several other EU countries, Slovenia has created a dedicated residence pathway for such foreign nationals: the Digital Nomad Visa, officially the Digital Nomad Residence Permit. This programme enables legal residence in Slovenia, allows the applicant to obtain residence permits for their family, and provides unrestricted travel within the Schengen Area.

Conditions for obtaining a digital nomad residence permit in Slovenia:

1

Proof of remote employment with a company not registered in Slovenia, or confirmation of self-employment/sole proprietorship in your home country with remote-based activity.

2

A minimum monthly income of at least twice the average Slovenian net salary at the time of application (as of July 2025 — approximately €3,300 net).

3

Submission of all mandatory documents required for any type of residence permit.

Important:

Digital nomads granted residence under this programme may not work for Slovenian employers;

Family members may relocate together with the main applicant without any minimum prior residence period.

Both the main applicant and their family members may submit their applications while already in Slovenia (if present legally — with a visa or under visa-free entry, depending on nationality).

The Digital Nomad Residence Permit may only be renewed no earlier than six months after the previous permit expires. However, while it is valid, it may be converted into another type of residence permit.

Applications are not prioritised: the average processing time is around three months

FAQ

Who is a digital nomad?

Who can apply for the Digital Nomad Programme?
Typically IT specialists, marketers, consultants, tutors, psychologists, business owners, or sole traders — essentially anyone able to work from any location and demonstrate the required monthly income.
What are the advantages of the Digital Nomad Programme in Slovenia?
You may legally reside in Slovenia while working for a foreign employer. You may travel freely within the Schengen Area without additional visas. Your entire family may relocate with you, provided the financial requirements are met.
How do I apply for a residence permit as a freelancer in Slovenia?
You may submit your application at the Slovenian embassy in your country of residence, or within Slovenia if you are legally present under a Schengen visa or visa-free entry. A completed application form and proof of remote employment with adequate income are required.
What are the disadvantages of the Digital Nomad Visa?
The permit is issued for one year and cannot be extended. You may apply again for the same residence type only six months after the previous one expires.
What are the advantages of the Digital Nomad Visa?
Beyond immediate family reunification and the ability to submit your first application directly in Slovenia, the programme gives you a year to explore the country and decide whether you wish to stay. During this year, you may apply for any other residence category and remain legally — without the six-month gap.
